Analytics Center of Excellence for a Mining Operation

One of the world's largest iron mining companies, with operations across 8 mining complexes and more than 40,000 employees, needed to radically transform its analytics management.
The Challenge
The company operated with siloed data across 8 different mines, each running incompatible legacy systems — SAP ERP in different versions, proprietary SCADA systems, and non-standardized departmental spreadsheets. Monthly consolidation of operational results took 3 weeks and involved dozens of analysts. ESG reports for investors were built manually, with a high risk of error and no traceability. At the same time, the absence of real-time operational KPIs prevented rapid corrective action in mining and processing fronts.
The Solution
We designed and implemented a modern data architecture based on Azure Synapse Analytics with a corporate data-mesh pattern — each operational domain publishing its data under standardized interface contracts. On that foundation, we built 25+ executive and operational dashboards in Power BI Premium covering production, cost, maintenance, and sustainability KPIs. An automated ESG reporting pipeline was developed with Power Automate, eliminating the monthly manual process. The program included forming an internal Center of Excellence with 25 analysts certified across the full technology stack.
